From the get go, we’re introduced to a company of just five performers, with clever gender swapped multi roles and rapid fire costume changes; the production immediately establishes its satirical tone, poking fun at the stiff upper lip and bureaucratic absurdities behind the meticulously documented operation.
Despite its relentless humour, Operation Mincemeat never loses sight of the remarkable true story at its heart. The show treats its historical source material with genuine respect, celebrating the ingenuity and bravery of those involved while never shying away from acknowledging the human cost of war. It even finds time to pay tribute to the operation’s most unlikely hero: the corpse itself.
The comic timing throughout is exceptional, but Moran Philips (Charles Cholmondeley and others) is a particular standout. His wonderfully awkward, anxiety-ridden portrayal is irresistibly funny, balancing nervous energy with impeccable physical comedy and earning some of the biggest laughs of the evening.
