Last night (Tuesday 10th Febraury), we headed back to the Treasury for our second Silent Book Club, after our post last month, the group’s numbers has skyrocketed from 2k to over 3k in just one week! It’s clear that many people in Plymouth are craving some more “me-time” and a peaceful way to connect.
The Treasury saw its biggest attendance yet, with readers filling over two-thirds of the venue! And a similar pattern at all their recent gatherings in other locations across the city.
A massive shoutout to the amazing volunteers Bethany, Alice, and Harry, for organising these sessions!
It was great to see a lot of new people and many solo, walking in, and seeing any nerves vanish with the warm welcome they received from people in the room. The atmosphere is less like a room of strangers and more like a gathering of old friends. It’s the perfect sanctuary for those with busy schedules or social anxiety who just want to reclaim their peace.
- No Homework: Bring whatever you’re reading (e-readers and audiobooks welcome!).
- The Format: 30 mins of settling in, 1 hour of blissful silent reading, and 30 mins of optional socialising.
- The Vibe: Low-pressure, free to attend, and totally inclusive.
- Mental Wellbeing: It provides a dedicated hour to escape digital noise and the daily grind. Warm Environment: The organisers have cultivated a space that feels welcoming from the moment you walk in.
Whether you’re new to the city or just need an excuse to finish that book on your shelf, this is your sign to give this group a go!
Sessions they run include:
- Books and Breakfast: Morning meetups for the early birds.
- The Writers Room: Dedicated space for local creatives.
- Evening Socials: Like this Tuesday at The Treasury, offering a perfect “night out” vibe.
