A new award winning escape room in Plymouth is now open, offering one of the largest challenges in the city. We were recently invited by the team at Cronologic to test our wits in their new 1666 themed experience, and of course, we jumped at the chance! #BestOfPlymouth #AdGifted
Cronologic is an independent business run by enthusiasts James and Claire. With a combined 11 years of industry experience and countless games under their belts, they’ve transitioned from being obsessed players to expert creators. Their focus is on moving away from the “office room with padlocks” layout to deliver total immersion through high quality sets and ingenious puzzles.
The centrepiece of their launch is Pudding Lane, themed around the Great Fire of London. It is a game that arrived in Plymouth with a massive reputation, previously ranked the 9th best escape room in the UK out of over 1,600 games at the prestigious TERPECA Awards (essentially the Oscars of the escape room world). When the original designers put the rights up for sale, James and Claire knew they had to bring this highly popular experience to Devon. After a meticulous construction period between October 2024 and August 2025, they have recreated the 17th century streets of London down to the finest, charred detail.
On the big day, our team of six assembled outside, pumped up from the slick briefing. The escape room door creaked open and, as smoke bellowed out, we wielded our torches and stepped inside. As the heavy click of the lock behind us signalled that our journey to 1666 had begun, we soon found ourselves in highly detailed surroundings that felt more like a high budget film set than a traditional game room, with plenty of clever touches recreating the 17th century feel.
We can’t give too much away, of course, but a few things really stood out. Instead of digital screens shouting hints at you, the immersion is kept intact through subtle details; for instance, having to consult a physical “diary” when you are stuck really helped maintain the atmosphere.
The gameplay kept us on our toes, forcing us to split up into two smaller side rooms and even requiring one of us to scale a short wall while the rest of the team shouted directions. It was a lovely, chaotic mix of “eureka” moments, plenty of “ahhhhhs,” frantic laughter, and the kind of adrenaline fuelled teamwork that only the best rooms can provoke.
Pudding Lane is an absolute must play. Whether you are a seasoned “pro” or someone who has never touched a puzzle in your life, the hands on approach of the owners ensures the experience is tailored to your level. James and Claire are clearly dedicated to making sure every group leaves with a story to tell.
And age is no barrier; Claire shared a wonderful story with us about a group of gentlemen in their 80s who recently visited Cronologic to tackle their very first escape room. They were working their way through a personal bucket list and had ticked off “escape room” as their latest adventure. By all accounts, they had a whale of a time, proving that whether you’re eight or eighty, the thrill of the chase is universal.
