Tor Bridge High is proud to officially launch a new Army Cadet Force (ACF) detachment in partnership with Devon Army Cadet Force, marking a new opportunity for young people and a milestone moment for the school and wider community.
More than 25 students from the Plymouth school have joined the detachment as its first cohort of cadets, with families attending the launch parade before the summer break. During the session, students took part in drill training and were introduced to badges of rank, signalling the beginning of their cadet journey and introducing key elements of discipline, teamwork and leadership.
Cadets will take part in a structured programme including fieldcraft, first aid, music, adventure training and leadership development. The unit will parade every Thursday evening at Tor Bridge High.
It is led by Sergeant (Sjt) Maisie Thompson, a newly qualified teacher at Tor Bridge High whose own experience as an Army Cadet inspired her to help establish the new unit.
Over the summer, many of the new cadets attended Devon Army Cadet Force’s summer camp, representing the school and Army Cadet Force exceptionally well and showing commitment, resilience, teamwork and a fantastic attitude throughout.
The detachment forms part of Tor Bridge High’s wider programme of personal development opportunities within the local community, supporting students to build confidence, resilience and leadership skills. As part of the Ted Wragg Trust, the school places strong emphasis on experiences beyond the classroom, helping young people develop skills for life after school.
The detachment is already oversubscribed for Cohort 1, with students from years 7–10 successfully securing places. From September 2026, the unit is open to young people aged 12 to 18 from across the wider Plymouth area.
Young people wishing to join the Tor Bridge High detachment can apply via the Army Cadet Force website. Students currently attending Tor Bridge High School can also speak directly to the Detachment Commander at school for more information and to sign up.
Colonel Frost, Commandant of Devon Army Cadet Force, said:
“The launch of the new Tor Bridge High Detachment marks an exciting milestone for Devon Army Cadet Force and for the young people of Plymouth. As we work towards the 30% expansion of cadets by 2030, this new detachment demonstrates exactly what that vision is about — opening doors for more young people to challenge themselves, grow in confidence, and discover what they’re capable of.
“Being an Army Cadet gives young people a sense of belonging, purpose, and pride. They learn leadership, resilience, teamwork, and practical skills that stay with them for life. We’re delighted to welcome Tor Bridge High into the ACF family and look forward to seeing their cadets thrive.”
Tracy Stephenson, Headteacher at Tor Bridge High, said:
“We’re deeply connected to our wonderful service community here in Plymouth and establishing a Cadet detachment at Tor Bridge High reflects this commitment. The cadets programme offers a fantastic opportunity to help young people develop confidence, resilience, and teamwork while gaining experiences that support personal growth inside and outside the classroom. A huge thank you to Sgt Thompson for helping deliver this vision and opportunity for our community.”
Sjt Thompson said:
“I am proud to be able to provide students with opportunities that build confidence, resilience, leadership, and teamwork. Being part of the very first intake makes this a special journey for them, and I’m excited to support them every step of the way.”
