We’ve heard a lot of good things about Rapscallion Records & Coffee, and on a recent visit to Mutley Plain, we could not resist popping round the corner onto Alexandra Road to check them out! #BestOfPlymouth
In a nutshell, Rapscallion Records & Coffee is a hybrid hangout space where the rich scratch of vintage vinyl pairs perfectly with the aroma of freshly steamed espresso. The turntable behind the counter is always spinning, and its quickly becoming a popular destination with its growing support for Plymouth’s independent music scene.
Founded by music enthusiasts Matthew and Christie, Rapscallion opened its doors in November 2025 as a deliberate antidote to the digital fatigue of modern streaming. Driven by a desire to create a relaxed, music focused space where communities can gather, talk, and share ideas, the duo transformed a former tattoo parlour into a cozy, creative sanctuary.
The Vibe & The Philosophy
The name Rapscallion draws visual inspiration from traditional pirate lore—a subtle nod to Plymouth’s deeply rooted maritime and Ocean City heritage. But don’t expect a cold, exclusive collector’s club. The ethos here is entirely about accessibility and community.
Whether you are a seasoned audiophile searching for a rare first pressing or a newcomer curious about starting your very first cassette tape or CD collection, the space welcomes everyone with open arms.
What Makes It Special?
- An Ever Changing Crate Selection: Rows of pre-loved and brand new vinyl spanning almost every genre imaginable, alongside curated selections of CDs and cassettes available to buy. They are also always on the lookout for new material!
- A Spotlight on Local Talent: Crucially, Matthew and Christie have dedicated physical rack space entirely to local, independent Southwest artists, helping underground musicians get their physical media directly into listeners’ hands.
- The In-House Café: Coffee beans ground to order, an extensive tea selection, and homemade cakes baked fresh on-site mean you can comfortably spend an entire afternoon crate digging.
- The Interactive Experience: Unlike shopping online, visitors are encouraged to use the store’s dedicated listening station, allowing you to sample a record and chat with the ultra knowledgeable team before making it a permanent part of your collection.
- Gig Wall: Check their array of posters from local music venues for upcoming events to see what’s on across the city.
More Than a Shop: A Cultural Hub
Rapscallion was built from the ground up to add lasting value to Plymouth’s grassroots music scene. Beyond the day to day retail, the space shifts shape after hours to become an intimate event venue. From exclusive album listening parties and record-signing events to live acoustic performances and competitive music quiz nights, it acts as a much-needed bridge connecting the city’s artists with their audiences.
With future plans to expand their upstairs space into a dedicated community art gallery and workshop area, Rapscallion is firmly solidifying itself as one of Plymouth’s essential hidden gems.
If you find yourself in Mutley, pop in, grab a flat white, and let the team spin you something completely unexpected. You’re guaranteed to leave with a fresh perspective and likely a new record under your arm!
