Tucked away in Plymouth’s City Business Park is a true local gem: the Retromix Café and Sweet Shop. This small café isn’t just a place to grab a bite; it’s a nostalgic trip through time, filled with old-school memorabilia, classic sweets, and a warm welcoming atmosphere.
Following the morning school run, I stumbled upon Retromix Café and Sweet Shop while searching for a nearby caffeine fix and while waiting for the coffee machine to warm up, I got to chatting with the owner, Steve. It’s immediately clear that Steve pours his heart and soul into the place. He’s a friendly and passionate host who loves sparking conversations between his customers, who often find a shared connection over the retro items on display.
A Treasure Trove of Nostalgia
Living up to its name, Retromix is packed from floor to ceiling with memorabilia from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. The walls are a curated collection of posters, toys, and metal signs that Steve has gathered over the years. As a self-proclaimed “big kid at heart,” he’s created a space that appeals to all ages, with visitors often exclaiming, “I remember that!”
Beyond the retro charm, the café offers a full menu for both dine-in and takeaway. The most popular item is the “The Scooby Doo Breakfast” with a delicious gluten-free option also available. You can also find baked potatoes, freshly made sandwiches, burgers, and other traditional favourites.
The Journey to Retromix
Steve has decades of experience as a chef, having worked in top establishments like the Elfordleigh Hotel and 42 commando, Dartmouth Naval College and more. Currently he runs a successful outdoor Retro Sweets and Toys events stall, also named “Retromix.” And three years ago, he saw the perfect opportunity to combine his passion for all things retro with his love for cooking and took over the café space where he is now.
He also prides himself on offering a unique selection of retro sweets and affordable, high-quality “pocket money toys” like marbles, playing cards, and other small games. Around Christmas, he puts together special Christmas hampers filled with these nostalgic sweets and toys, perfect for a unique gift.
While many of his regular customers are from the business park, Retromix also welcomes students and the general public, who can access the café through the main reception.
